DR | Alvin

Before I left for the Dominican Republic mission, I agonized over my contribution because I felt that my health issues would hinder my contribution. I repeatedly asked God for His guidance as to what I should do. Then one evening a message as clear as day came to me. It said, “Alvin, you know what to do.” I shared this message with Denny and Wynn, and their responses helped me understand God’s message. 

I was a bit apprehensive about the trip, but when we got to the Dominican Republic my purpose became crystal clear. God wanted me to help spread the Gospel and share my faith. I realized that prayer and listening were the most powerful tools I had. My sports knowledge and experience were what God wanted to use to spread His word.

I met people who were truly happy and joyful, and they treasured and honored God. God was teaching me through the people of the Dominican Republic how to be joyful and humble. I felt guilty, and still do to some degree, about all I have been blessed with in my life. The people taught me how to be joyful and happy, and I thank God for them.

I was honored to be with such a great and special group of God-fearing men. They constantly helped me physically and spiritually. Great guys that I will remember forever. I think that just meeting them was part of God’s plan and they helped me grow spiritually.

My road with God had been like a roller coaster, but now God has touched my heart and has answered questions that I’ve wrestled with most of my life. This trip was meant to be.  God wanted me to help spread His gospel, but most of all He wanted me and my soul. I believe that the mission was two-fold, the Dominican people and my faith.
